My Hike:

11/26/2016

We were escaping the rain to spend some time in Forks and I couldn’t help but pull over because it might have been our only chance to get outdoors that day.  It is barely a trail but I guess you could spend some time exploring behind the tree, as well.  The tree has seen better days but it was fascinating to see the cycle of life as this ancient cedar has given life to many others after it.

It was fun to stand inside the hollow of the tree and gaze up into the sky. Reminded me of one of my favorite books as a child, My Side of The Mountain. We circled around to see the tree from different angles, eventually found one living branch of the tree left, holding strong. This was the perfect spot to stretch our legs while we waited for the tide to go out on the beach a bit.

Directions: From Aberdeen/Hoquiam, drive north on Highway 101 69.5 miles to the Kalaloch campground.  From Port Townsend, drive south on Highway 101 138 miles. Just north of Beach 4 and across from Beach 6 on Highway 101, you will see a big brown sign, “Big Cedar Tree”. Turn right (east) and drive the .3 miles to the trailhead or circle parking area.  No facilities.

Click here for other hikes nearby, Kalaloch Beach and The Tree of Life and Beach 4.  To read more about our trip, head on over to Buried Treasure in The Twilight Zone.  I also wrote about how this tree reminded me about one of my favorite childhood books, My Side of The Mountain.
