Day 2: Junction of Lookingglass Lake to Cached Lake (Trail Creek Trail) with side trip to Eagle Lake and scramble attempt of Needlepoint: 7 miles/1300ft gain (my scramble added another 900ft)/7450ft high (8976ft possible) (#1922, 1931)

Read about it here:

Return to Eagle Cap, Day 2: Not Your Grandma’s Needlepoint

Day 3: Cached Lake to Main Eagle to junction of the Bench Canyon Trail with side trip to Heart and Arrow Lake and back to trailhead: 14.2 miles, 2085ft gain/7835ft high (#1922, 1937)  It is possible to make a loop up the Trail Creek Trail (1922) past Cached Lake to a junction with the Bench Canyon Trail.  Conditions prevented us from doing so on this trip.

Read about it here:

For more information on planning a hike in the Wallowas, check out my Eagle Cap Wilderness page.

Directions:  From the town of Pendleton on 84 in Oregon, head south towards La Grande (about 53 miles).  Take 203 to Union (14.25 miles) and then Medical Springs (another 20.25 miles and about 1.5 hours total).  Don’t blink because it isn’t more than a few houses and you will keep left onto Big Creek Rd (FR 67).  From here drive 16 miles and then turn left on FR 77.  It’s another mile and then you turn right on FR 7755.  You have 4 more miles and you will be at the trailhead.  Elevation 4,910ft.

I recreate on the stolen ancestral lands of the Coast Salish, Stillaguamish, Snohomish and Tulalip peoples, lands held in time immemorial.  This land and its people must be protected and honored; their history, relationships and culture are not only of the past but are now and into the future, holding the key to proper stewardship.  Learn more here…
