My hike:

3/10/2019

Ruby Beach is one the most iconic stops along the Washington Coast in a long string of beaches to explore.  We took time to walk a portion of its cobblestone length on a trip around the Olympic Peninsula recently and I can’t believe I’d never visited it before!

There is a short dirt trail that leads down to the beach from a bluff above down to a log jam at the outlet for Cedar Creek that runs out to the ocean.  You will have to maneuver the logs to reach the beach.

From here you can wonder in both directions but most will venture north to visit the well known seastacks and Abbey Island.  Watch for the tide, the higher in the more wading there is to do over the creek.

Make sure to take care as you walk along and around rock outcroppings and the cliff walls.  Sleeper waves can surprise you and knock you over and rocks are known to tumble down from the clay above.  Beach walks need constant attention!

Directions:  Ruby Beach is located 27 miles south of Forks, WA on HWY 101 or 77 miles north from Hoquiam.  Look for the sign for “Ruby Beach” and turn west into a short road to a parking lot on the bluff.  Privy available and no permit is needed.  This beach is a part of the Kalaloch area, you can find current information here. Because it is a part of the national park system and a marine sanctuary, dogs are permitted on leash.  You can camp nearby at Kalaloch campground, reservations can be made here.

I recreate on the stolen ancestral lands of the Coast Salish, Stillaguamish, Snohomish and Tulalip peoples, lands held in time immemorial.  This land and its people must be protected and honored; their history, relationships and culture are not only of the past but are now and into the future, holding the key to proper stewardship.  Learn more here…
